Plugs are young orchid plants that are growing in plug trays and ready to pot in 2″ or bigger pots. The best thing about them is that they are affordable. I pot them into 2″ or 3″ pots with large orchid bark as media and I water them about every other day for the first few months. These plants are a good 4 years away from blooming, but when you do bloom them you will feel a sense of accomplishment. I grew most of the orchids in my collection from plugs.

This is one of my own crosses; let me tell you about the parents. I was in Hawaii a few years ago and happened into a greenhouse that had several hundred seedlings of Rlc Love Triangle in bloom; it was an incredible sight, and I picked out the best dozen and had them shipped home. Never before or since have I had the chance to do that and I have enjoyed those plants every fall since then. There was quite a bit diversity in the plants I bought, everything from flower count and size, to when they bloomed, and in the the color, which varied from deep red to bright waxy orange, and flower-count varies from 5 to 11 per cluster and flowers are over 4″ wide. Since a hundred different people have tried to buy these 12 plants from me since then, I ended up making a sibling cross, crossing the 2 that I thought had the best size, shape, and flower count with each other and really look forward to seeing some of them bloom. Both parents are pictured as well as the family tree.

Expectations – Flowers on this cross will undoubtedly range from red to orange and most will be highly scented. The parents bloom anytime from August to January.

Notes – I have quite a few crosses in cell trays right now besides this and will be adding them to this page as time goes by.
