Rhyncholaeliocattleya (Rlc.) Alma Kee is a distinguished orchid hybrid registered by Miyamoto in 1975, resulting from the cross between Cattleya Alma (1913) and Rlc. Cheah Bean-Kee. This exquisite cultivar is renowned for its large, vibrant yellow flowers adorned with a striking red lip, often exhibiting intricate veining from its C. downiana parent, that enhances its visual appeal. The blossoms are not only captivating in appearance but also emit a pleasant fragrance, adding to their allure.
One of the most celebrated clones of this hybrid is Rlc. Alma Kee ‘Tipmalee’, which has received multiple awards, including an 86 point Award of Merit from the American Orchid Society (AM/AOS), awarded in 1986. This particular clone is noted for its impressive flower size, with blooms measuring over 6″, and its robust growth habit.
Like most Cattleyas, Rlc. Alma Kee prefers intermediate to warm temperatures, fairly humid growing conditions, and direct filtered light, particularly during the early morning hours. Watering should be done in the morning when the growing medium is dry, ensuring that the foliage is dry before evening. Regular fertilization during the growing season supports healthy development and flowering.
These plants are growing well in their 3.5″ pots having been repotted in 2024 and I would expect them to be flowering within 2-3 years.
