Cattleya luminosa ‘Bronze Gem’ × self (4N)

A beautiful, compact-growing Cattleya dowiana hybrid with the potential for spectacular bronze-yellow flowers and a rich maroon lip!

Cattleya luminosa ‘Bronze Gem’ is a particularly attractive selection of this fascinating Brazilian species, formerly known as Cattleya Triumphans, a natural hybrid between Cattleya dowiana var. aurea and Cattleya tenebrosa var. aurea.

The flowers are typically warm bronze-yellow with a striking, richly colored maroon lip. This combination of golden tones and deep contrasting color makes for an exceptionally attractive Cattleya. Flowering generally occurs during the summer and many of these will be scented.

What Makes These 4N Orchids Special?

These seedlings come from a 4N (tetraploid) parent, a desirable characteristic among orchid growers and breeders.

Most orchids have two sets of chromosomes (2N), while tetraploid orchids have four sets (4N). Tetraploidy can produce several desirable characteristics:

  • Larger, fuller flowers with broader petals and sepals.
  • Heavier flower substance, giving blooms a thicker, more substantial texture.
  • Improved flower longevity, with blooms potentially lasting longer than those of comparable 2N plants.
  • Richer, more intense colors, particularly desirable in bronze and maroon Cattleyas.
  • Excellent breeding potential, especially when crossed with other tetraploid orchids.

Not every tetraploid exhibits all these traits, but 4N Cattleyas are highly prized for their potential to produce exceptional flowers; in other words, these have the potential to be special.

About These Plants

These are healthy, vigorous, well-established seedlings growing in 2-inch pots. Originally purchased as community-pot seedlings approximately one year ago, they have been grown on individually and are developing nicely.

These are seed-grown plants, so individual flowers will vary. That variation is part of the excitement of growing Cattleyas from seed—you never know when an exceptional new flower will emerge!
