Laelia purpurata is a fairly tall Brazilian Cattleya species that produces tall spikes of large colorful flowers in the summer. L purpurata was reclassified as a Cattleya a few years ago and can be called either a Cattleya or a Laelia. Spring-blooming L purpurata is typically very easy to grow, fast growing, makes multiple leads in a medium sized pot, and holds its flowers up without staking.
There are many different varieties of L. purpurata and the flammea variety is defined by the lavender flame patterning on white on the petals and its colorful lip. See also our plants of L. purpurata var Schusteriana.
These plants are established in 3.5″ pots and should be about 2 years from blooming size.
